School Libraries: Information Boutique or Department Store?

This school year, we learned that a district administrator instructed a librarian to acquire eBooks only, unaware that during the pandemic, students and parents reached out to librarians for curbside-delivered printed books. Our programmers worked with librarians to simplify self-service requests that even K-3 students embraced! Technology also delivered advance booking services facilitating classroom book delivery for teachers ordering topical resources for their students. In addition, the pandemic did drive more students and teachers to use the digital resources that library portals broadcast and that Chromebook proliferation made possible to access. We will explore how librarians can use technology to build and offer "boutique" information services within a "department" store setting, using diverse media formats to respond to diverse and inclusive learning contexts.
